What is Green Friday?

Green Friday is Beryl’s annual alternative to the traditional Black Friday frenzy. Instead of pushing people to shop more, we’re helping people move differently.

The campaign aims to inspire riders to make small travel switches that reduce congestion, cut emissions and keep our cities moving smoothly during one of the busiest weekends of the year.

This year, from Friday, 28 to Sunday, 30 November, we’re offering 20% off all Beryl Minute Bundles and Riding Passes with the promo code GREEN20, keeping active travel accessible for everyone.

Why buck the trend? 

Black Friday isn’t just chaotic because of discounts; it’s also one of the busiest travel weekends for UK cities. In 2024, UK retailers saw a +40.5% week‑on‑week boost in footfall during Black Friday, and in‑store visits rose nearly 5% year‑on‑year. 

That many extra shoppers means more journeys, often short car rides or deliveries, putting extra pressure on city streets, parking, and air quality.

Transport is the UK’s biggest emitter: in 2023, domestic transport produced roughly 112 million tonnes of CO₂, around 29 % of the nation’s total emissions. Meanwhile, traffic levels continue to climb: 2024 saw increases in miles travelled by cars and vans compared with 2023. 

The good news? Even a small switch from a car to a bike, e‑bike or e-scooter makes a real difference: fewer emissions, smoother streets, and cleaner air, all year round but especially for high-traffic weekends like Black Friday.
