Happy International Women’s Day! How to Start (and Keep) Riding

Happy International Women’s Day! A time to celebrate progress, empowerment, and the incredible contributions of women around the world.

International Women’s Day, taking place this year on Sunday, 8 March, is a global celebration of the achievements of women and an opportunity to highlight the importance of equality and empowerment in every aspect of life. It’s a day to recognise progress and start conversations.

It’s also the perfect moment to encourage more women to experience the freedom and benefits of cycling (or e-scooting!), whether that’s riding to work or simply enjoying time outdoors. We know, from our Annual Rider Report, that many women still face barriers when it comes to riding. So, this International Women’s Day, we’re helping more women build the confidence to start rolling.

Why More Women Should Ride

Traversing on bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters offers numerous benefits, from saving money on transportation to improving well-being. It’s also a great way to reclaim space in our cities and feel more independent in everyday travel.

However, we also recognise that safety concerns and lack of confidence can hold many women back. That’s why we’re committed to making cycling more accessible, supportive, and fun for everyone.

How to Get Started

If you’re new to cycling or haven’t ridden in years, here are 5 simple steps to help you get started:

  1. Try an e-bike and e-scooter share - If you don’t own a bike or e-scooter, Beryl is a great way to get started without the commitment of buying one. Our vehicles are easy to use and available in convenient locations. The electric assist is a game-changer when it comes to hills!

  2. Plan a short ride - Start with a short, quiet route to build confidence. Parks, cycle paths, or quieter streets are ideal places to begin.

  3. Ride with a friend - Everything is easier (and more fun) when you have support! Find a cycling buddy or join a local women’s cycling group.

  4. Get comfortable - Wear what makes you feel good and make small adjustments to the bike for a more comfortable ride. Our bikes are designed for ease of use, with adjustable seats and built-in lights.

  5. Be kind to yourself - It’s normal to feel nervous at first. Start at your own pace and remember, every ride builds confidence!

Staying Motivated and Building Confidence

Once you’ve started riding, here’s how to keep going:

  • Set small goals - Whether it’s riding once a week or replacing one car journey with a bike or e-scooter ride, setting small, achievable goals can help make cycling a habit.

  • Find safe and enjoyable routes - Use cycle maps or apps to find dedicated cycle paths and quieter streets.

  • Join a community - There are many women’s cycling groups and events that offer support and encouragement.

  • Focus on the positives - The fresh air, the energy boost, the time saved, all great reasons to stick with riding!

Feeling safe is important

Safety should always be a top priority when cycling to work. Here’s how to stay safe and visible on the road:

  • Stay visible - Beryl bikes and e-scooters have you covered with super strong rear and front lights but adding a high-vis layer or any reflective accessories can help you stay extra illuminated.

  • Follow the rules of the road - Ride predictably, signal your intentions, and obey traffic laws. Use bike lanes wherever possible.

  • Protect your noggin - Always wear a properly fitted helmet, your head will thank you!
