What is Cycle to Work?
Cycle to Work is a UK government-backed employee initiative that helps commuters and employees make cycling more affordable.
Through a salary sacrifice arrangement, you can access a bike and cycling equipment at a reduced cost, making it easier to choose sustainable travel for your commute and everyday journeys.
What is DASH Flex?
DASH Flex is a virtual card that allows eligible employees to pay for bike-share journeys using the Cycle to Work scheme.
Instead of choosing and buying a bike of your own, you choose a monthly DASH Flex amount and use your virtual card with supported bike-share operators, including Beryl.
Why use Cycle to Work with Beryl?
If you want a sustainable and flexible commute, but don't necessarily want to own a bike, bike shares like Beryl can offer a great alternative. You can pick up a Beryl bike, e-bike or e-scooter when you need one and not have to worry about storing or maintaining your own vehicle.
And with DASH Flex, you can use your Cycle to Work for your Beryl journeys. Eligible riders can typically save between 28% and 51% on their rides, depending on their individual circumstances, making it even more affordable to leave the car at home and choose two wheels instead.
How does it work?
Getting started is simple:
- Check that your employer offers DASH as its Cycle to Work provider. This is something your employer needs to set up.
- Create and log in to your DASH account and select DASH Flex.
- Choose your monthly balance.
- Add your DASH Flex virtual card as a payment method in the Beryl app.
- Ride as usual.
There's no voucher to redeem and no need to change how you ride with Beryl.
What you need to know
DASH Flex provides a simple way to use Cycle to Work to pay for your journeys, without changing how you ride. You can continue using Beryl as normal, while using your Cycle to Work to reduce the effective cost of your journeys.
If your employer doesn't currently offer DASH, you can introduce them to the scheme. Simply share your employer's details with DASH and their team can contact your HR or employee benefits team to explain how DASH and DASH Flex work.

How much can I save on Beryl with Cycle to Work?
Riders can typically save between 28% and 51% on journeys through DASH Flex, depending on their individual tax circumstances and employer setup.
The saving comes from the way Cycle to Work is paid for: the amount is deducted from your gross salary rather than your take-home pay, which can reduce the Income Tax and National Insurance you pay on that amount.
Your exact saving will depend on your individual circumstances and your employer's Cycle to Work arrangements.
Is bike share covered by Cycle to Work?
Yes. Bike share can be included within Cycle to Work arrangements, provided the relevant scheme conditions are met.
HMRC guidance covers the use of shared cycles within the rules for employer-provided bikes and makes clear that Cycle to Work isn't limited to a bike that an employee ultimately owns.
You can read the relevant guidance from HMRC and GOV.UK.
How is DASH Flex different from traditional Cycle to Work?
With a traditional Cycle to Work arrangement, you usually choose a specific bike and eligible accessories, enter into a hire agreement and use the bike for the duration of the arrangement.
With DASH Flex, you can use supported bike-share operators, including Beryl, without being tied to a single bike. You can use bike share when and where it suits you, without having to store, maintain or eventually own a bike.
How can Beryl bike share help reduce commuting emissions?
Cycling is one of the lowest-carbon ways to travel, making bike share an option for employees looking to replace some car journeys with cycling.
The European Cyclists' Federation estimates that a conventional bicycle's full lifecycle emissions are around 21g of CO₂ per kilometre, compared with roughly 271g per kilometre for the average car.
DASH has also developed a Cycle to Work Carbon Calculator, allowing employees to compare the CO₂ produced by cycling with other ways of commuting.
What else is included in DASH's Cycle to Work platform?
DASH Flex is part of the wider DASH platform, which also includes a cycling marketplace offering bikes, e-bikes and eligible cycling equipment through salary sacrifice, as well as e-bike subscriptions.
So employees can choose the option that works for them – whether that's owning a bike, subscribing to an e-bike or using bike share through DASH Flex.
What if my employer doesn't offer DASH?
You don't necessarily have to wait for your employer to raise it. You can introduce DASH to your HR or employee benefits team by entering their details here.
DASH will then get in touch with them directly and explain how DASH and DASH Flex work.
