Breaking Down Barriers to Employment in Norwich

Helping Norwich jobseekers get to interviews, training and work by removing transport as a barrier.

In January 2025, we launched the WiN with Beryl: The Free Commute Scheme: a collaboration between Work in Norwich, Jobcentre Plus, and Beryl, supported by our scheme sponsor National Grid.

This initiative was created to remove transport as a barrier to finding and retaining long-term, meaningful employment in Norwich. By providing free and discounted access to Beryl bikes and e-scooters, we’re helping local jobseekers travel to interviews, training and their new jobs with ease.

Beryl riders

The impact so far

  • 4,700+ journeys made by local jobseekers

  • 10,700 km travelled, with 960+ hours ridden

  • 73 people referred by Jobcentre Plus Work Coaches

  • 54% of journeys between 1–3km

  • An estimated 494 kg of CO₂eq saved

Our data shows peak use during traditional commuting hours, as well as steady use throughout the day, suggesting Beryl is supporting both shift workers and people attending interviews.

We’re proud to be part of a collaboration that is making a real difference for Norwich jobseekers, and we look forward to building on this success in the months ahead.

“With this exciting collaboration, Work in Norwich and Beryl are supporting the DWP and local jobseekers to make commuting to interviews and work more accessible with free sustainable commuting options.”
